What is Wrong With My Ears?!

Hearing loss and vertigo can have a variety of causes. All of them relate to the way your ears work, but the right treatment will depend on what condition you actually have. Symptoms of hearing loss and vertigo can be caused by things like:

  • Ear pain and infections
  • Ear fluid and eustachian tube dysfunction
  • Clogged ears, thanks to wax (cerumen)
  • Prolonged exposure to loud noises
  • Tinnitus
  • Aging
  • Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ),
  • Auditory processing disorder
  • Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)
  • Ménière's disease
  • Labyrinthitis

All of these conditions affect the functioning of the middle and inner ear, which typically leads to changes in hearing and balance. And often, it takes an experienced specialist like Dr. Joorabchi to distinguish between them.

What Is an Ear Test Like?

To check your ears, Dr. Joorabchi will perform a series of different tests, depending on the symptoms you’re experiencing. He’ll start with a basic visual examination of your ears to see if there are any obvious signs of dysfunction. In many cases, the issue is relatively simple to spot, like a clog or damaged eardrum, and he can determine those causes simply by looking inside the ear.

He’ll also check to see if you have an ear infection or if there’s any fluid in your middle ear. From there, Dr. Joorabchi will probably perform a hearing test (sometimes called a “diagnostic auditory evaluation”) to determine the extent of any hearing loss you’re experiencing. In this test, you’ll be given a set of special headphones and then asked to respond to different aural stimuli. The audiometer will play tones at differing frequencies and volumes, and your responses will indicate how well your ears are working. This test will check both your left and right ears independently to see if there’s an issue with your hearing in one or both ears.

What Happens After the Tests?

Once Dr. Joorabchi has a solid diagnosis for you, you’ll be able to discuss your treatment options. For hearing loss, there are several treatments available, ranging from superficial to surgical.

For external remedies, Dr. Joorabchi can clean out clogged ears, prescribe medication to cure infections, recommend custom earmolds or other forms of hearing protection, or even outfit you with a hearing aid (to learn more about our hearing aid services, click here). Surgical options — which all depend on the type and cause of any hearing loss you have — can include:

  • Tympanoplasty — fixes middle ear problems, sometimes including repairing your eardrum
  • Mastoidectomy — removing some of the air pockets in your skull that are interfering with your hearing
  • Stapedectomy — removing and replacing part of one of your middle-ear bones that aren’t working properly

Before determining your customized treatment plan, Dr. Joorabchi will take all the time necessary to explain all your options, answer all your questions, and find the treatment that is just right for you. With Dr. Joorabchi, your emotional and physical needs are important.

Types of Tests

The doctor may also use another type of hearing test that uses a tuning fork. The fork is struck and then placed against your head in various locations.

Whether or not or how well you can hear the tone will tell Dr. Joorabchi if the hearing loss you’re experiencing is related to the bone structure of your skull. Other more specialized tests may be performed to check for any issues with the brain’s audio processing. In these tests, words or sentences are mixed with background sounds to determine how well your brain can filter out speech from noise.

While the tests are different, they are all painless and relatively simple to perform. Except for the brain scans which can’t always be done right away, Dr. Joorabchi can perform all of the tests in-house on the day of your visit.

Vertigo

If you’ve been experiencing symptoms of vertigo, Pembroke Pines specialist Dr. Joorabchi will perform another series of tests to measure your balance and neurological response. He offers VNG (Vestibulonystagmography) testing to get a detailed exam of the inner ear balance system. Usually, these tests involve simple head movements or standing up and sitting down. In some cases though, Dr. Joorabchi may have you undergo a CT scan or MRI.
