Spring is here! Are your allergies?

As if we didn’t have enough to deal with, spring is now approaching and those patients with seasonal allergies are finding themselves coughing, sneezing, and dealing with those notoriously itchy, watery eyes. Don’t worry—our Pembroke, Pines, FL, otolaryngologist, Dr. Craig Shapiro and Dr. Sina Joorabchi, can help you get your allergy symptoms under control.

Limit Allergen Exposure

There are ways to reduce your exposure to certain allergies. This means keeping track of the pollen counts before going outside. On high pollen days, it’s best to stay inside with the windows closed. If you need to be outdoors, make sure to remove your clothes immediately after coming inside and place them in the laundry.

Have other members of your family tackle the lawn mowing and outdoor activities around the house, or you can hire a professional to do these chores for you during the spring months. Also, avoid hanging your laundry out to dry on the line. It may make your sheets and clothes smell fresh, but you also risk tracking pollen in the house.

Improve Air Quality in Your Home

It’s impossible to completely remove all allergens from your home, but there are ways to reduce allergen levels, such as:

  • Using a HEPA air filter, especially in the bedroom
  • Keeping pets out of bedrooms
  • Making sure all heating and AC is being properly cleaned out and maintained
  • Using a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter, and vacuuming often (especially if you have carpets)

Try Non-Prescription Medication

If your symptoms only rear their head for a couple of weeks, then you may be able to get away with taking a simple over-the-counter antihistamine or decongestant (depending on the symptoms you experience). Of course, if you find yourself suffering from severe allergies, our Pembroke Pines ENT doctors can provide you with a stronger medication or immunotherapy.
