Have persistent sinus infections, trouble sleeping, and facial pressure become the norm, with over-the-counter treatment options failing to provide you with the relief that you need? Currently, there are 30.8 million Americans who have been diagnosed with chronic sinusitis. Unfortunately, the issue here is understanding why something as simple as an acute sinus infection can somehow lead to persistent and chronic problems. Luckily, while researchers are still figuring out why chronic sinusitis occurs, our Pembroke Pines, FL, ENT doctors can still help treat nasal blockages, swelling, and other symptoms!

What is sinusitis and when does this infection become chronic?

Sinusitis or a sinus infection leads to inflammation within the nasal passageways, often as the result of fungus or bacteria. Those with sinus infections often deal with nasal pressure/pain, loss of smell, stuffed noses, and difficulty breathing. An acute sinus infection usually occurs after a cold or series of allergies.

However, sinusitis becomes chronic when simple at-home care and treatment aren’t helping and you’ve been dealing with persistent symptoms for over three months.

How can an otolaryngologist help me?

Since chronic sinusitis is the result of inflammation rather than an infection, the goal of treatment is to get your inflammation under control. This can be done in one of several ways, with the first course of action usually being medication such as nasal steroid sprays. Sometimes there are other issues present such as asthma or allergies that our doctor will need to treat as well, for these issues could be making your inflammation worse.

If medication is unable to get your chronic sinusitis under control, then it might be time to talk to a doctor about getting surgery. Of course, sinus surgery has advanced a lot over the years and we can now offer a simple balloon sinuplasty, which is a minimally invasive procedure that doesn’t require an incision or the removal of bone or tissue.

Instead, a catheter with a deflated balloon at the end is guided into the blocked nasal passage where the balloon is then inflated. As the balloon is inflated it will open up the blockage, allowing mucus and bacteria to properly drain. Even once the catheter is removed, the sinus cavity will remain open.
