Looking for relief from your sore, aching throat? Find out what you can do to alleviate your discomfort.
A sore throat is a miserable feeling. Now your morning cup of Joe is replaced with a soothing, throat-coating tea. You may find it challenging to eat anything without the painful swallowing. Having a sore throat is no fun, but our Pembroke Pines, FL otolaryngologists, Dr. Craig Shapiro and Dr. Sina Joorabchi, knows what to do to help relieve your sore throat. Discover the most common causes of a sore throat and how to treat it.
What causes a sore throat?
Usually when you get a sore throat it’s a warning sign of an impeding illness. When a sore throat presents along with symptoms of a cold then the cause is a virus, which will usually just go away once the body fights off the infection.
However, many people will also experience a sore throat due to a bacterial infection. This kind of infection is better known as strep throat and it will actually require medication from our Pembroke Pines ENT doctors.
Other causes of sore throats include dry air and allergies.
How to treat a sore throat?
If your sore throat is the result of a cold or flu then usually no medical intervention is necessary. If a sore throat is due to strep throat then we will prescribe you antibiotics to help kill the infection.
But there are ways for you to manage your symptoms from the comfort of your own home. We recommend drinking plenty of fluids and resting as much as possible. Avoid physical or strenuous activities and give your body time to heal properly. Opt for soothing warm soups and drinks, or enjoying a little ice cream may help to numb and ease throat discomfort (plus, who doesn’t like having an excuse to enjoy ice cream?).
Other sore throat relievers include:
- Over-the-counter pain medications like ibuprofen
- Throat lozenges
- Avoiding smoking
- Using a humidier
- Gargling with salt water
- Trying some raw honey before bed
