Headaches are a common issue that happens to all of us at some point during our lives. Dr. Sina Joorabchi offers the latest advances in sinus treatment to combat the root cause of the pain in your head. Balloon sinuplasty is a proven treatment for sinus headaches, and Dr. Joorabchi has been helping people from Miami to Hollywood say “so long” to their sinus pain after just one treatment at his clinic in Pembroke Pines. He can do the same for you today!

How Do I Know If My Symptoms Are From a Sinus Headache?

To know if your headache is a result of a sinus infection or inflammation in the nasal cavities as opposed to something else, then you will most likely experience pain and pressure around the sinus area

This means your headache pain will most likely occur in the forehead or behind the eyes. You may also notice that your headache gets worse when you change positions or bend over. Along with a headache, you may also experience a stuffy nose, cough, sore throat, or nasal discharge. These are all signs of a sinus infection.

Common treatments usually involve nasal sprays and antibiotics, but these don’t always work well. From there, most people just treat the symptoms — taking over-the-counter decongestants, breathing in steam, or doing a nasal lavage. But balloon sinuplasty can work even better than all of those to open up your sinuses and get rid of the headaches for up to two years with just one treatment.

What Is a Balloon Sinuplasty?

Dr. Joorabchi’s in-office sinus balloon is a breakthrough innovation used to treat patients with chronic sinusitis. Unlike traditional surgical tools, the image-guided balloon requires absolutely no cutting or removal of any bone or tissue.

This method uses a small image-guided balloon to open inflamed sinuses, meaning you’ll be breathing better in no time. No general anesthesia is required, so you’ll be awake and alert immediately following the procedure. Studies have shown balloon sinuplasty is incredibly safe and provides lasting relief. It’s much less invasive than surgical methods, so there’s less bleeding, and that means you’ll have a faster recovery, so you can return to work much quicker.

Is Balloon Sinuplasty Right for Me?

If you’ve tried all the medicines and nothing is working, balloon sinuplasty may hold the answers you’re looking for.

As with all kinds of procedures, it’s important that you not have any serious medical issues — things like cancer and heart disease. In those cases, we’d want you to get those conditions treated first before addressing your sinus issues. Also, if you’re currently sick or have an infection (other than your sinusitis), you probably shouldn’t do a balloon sinuplasty right now. Even if you have chronic sinusitis, balloon sinuplasty may not be right for everyone.

The procedure may not work well for people with some structural conditions like a severely deviated septum or facial trauma. Also, you probably shouldn’t get a balloon sinuplasty if you’ve got polyps in your sinuses, sinusitis caused by a fungus, or cystic fibrosis. Dr. Joorabchi encourages all of his patients to get a second opinion if they feel uncomfortable and to make sure to talk to their primary care physician just to make sure they’re ready for any procedure.

What is the Balloon Sinuplasty Procedure Like?

The balloon sinuplasty procedure is done in-house at Dr. Joorabchi’s clinic so there’s no inconvenient hospital stay required.

In all, the whole procedure should take less than an hour. We’ll only use a local anesthetic, and most patients experience feeling some pressure during the procedure, but no actual pain. This means you’ll be awake and alert after the procedure. Once you’ve been numbed, Dr. Joorabchi will use a tiny camera (“endoscope”) to look up your nose and into your sinuses.

He’ll use that camera to guide a catheter and wire for the balloon up and into position at the opening of your blocked sinus cavity. Once he’s confirmed he’s got it in the right place, he’ll insert a small balloon at the opening and inflate it slowly, pushing your airway open. Dr. Joorabchi will then clean out your sinus cavity with saline solution, making sure to get rid of the blockages. When that’s complete, he’ll deflate and remove the balloon.

What Can I Expect During Recovery from Balloon Sinuplasty?

Recovery from balloon sinuplasty is usually pretty easy. Your biggest issue for the first few days will be drainage, which can sometimes be bloody. Most people prefer to sleep with their heads elevated to make the drainage process easier. Your nose, cheek, and forehead may be tender and feel sore for a few days too.

Dr. Joorabchi will probably recommend that you try not to blow your nose for a couple of days and avoid strenuous activity for the first week or so. However, you can probably go back to work and/or do normal, daily activities within 24-48 hours of the procedure. If you do have any discomfort, over-the-counter pain medicines or anti-inflammatories are usually sufficient. Dr. Joorabchi will make sure you’re fully informed about what to expect and equipped with all the knowledge you need to care for your head as it heals.

Balloon Sinuplasty Results

You can expect to feel the results immediately after you’ve recovered within a week or two. Your headaches should be gone and breathing should be much easier compared to how it was before the balloon sinuplasty procedure. If you were snoring or blowing your nose a lot, all of that should be gone too.

Most patients report improvements to their overall quality of life thanks to fewer sinusitis attacks and less pain. Assuming everything with the procedure and your recovery goes well, your improved condition should last for as long as two years. There are many factors involved that are specific to your body and condition, but Dr. Joorabchi fully expects you to have a great experience with balloon sinuplasty.
